Entropy

Entropy is considered the slow or gradual decline of order in a system. Burning wood represents an increase in entropy. The wood begins as a solid object and as it burns, it expands into a pile of ashes. The order of the atoms are disrupted and scattered amongst the pit.

Genetically Modified Organism

A genetically modified organism or a GMO, is any organism that has been genetically altered in a specific way that doesn’t happen naturally. This tomato plant is a hybrid of two other tomatoes, which does not occur in nature by itself.

Natural Selection

This image of roadkill represents the process of natural selection. In this process, the better adapted an organism is to their environment, the higher chance that organism has to survive and produce offspring. The skunk embodies this process because it didn’t have the ability or intelligence to recognize the danger before running across the road.

Gymnosperm Cone

Just like the leaf, a gymnosperm cone also grows on the type of plant where the seeds are not enclosed by any fruit or ovary. In fact, the cone is actually what holds the seeds. To protect the seeds from any possible dangers, the cone closes its scales to keep the seeds inside. They reopen when the weather becomes warmer or the danger disappears.

Animal with a Segmented Body

An animal with a segmented body has different body parts that are grouped together and called a specific name. A spider’s body is only segmented into two different parts, the cephalothorax and the abdomen.

Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissue contains layers of cells that cover both internal and external surfaces of the body. The epidermis contains epithelial tissue. The skin protects our inner organs, secretes sweat, and absorbs things such as water. These are all functions of epithelial tissue.

Hydrophilic

To be hydrophilic means the other object interacting with the water will either mix with it, dissolve, or absorb it. Soil has the tendency to allow water to pass through it so that plants are able to absorb the water for use.

Ectotherm

An ectotherm is simply a cold-blooded organism. This type of animal relies on outside sources to provide them with body heat. This fish’s internal body temperature is very close to that of the water in the bowl. Most ectotherms include reptiles, fish, and amphibians.

Keystone Species

A keystone species is any species that if removed from the ecosystem, the environment they once inhabited would drastically change. Humans are considered a keystone species because other organisms are heavily dependent and affected by us. If humans were removed from a specific area of the world, other species would have the ability to thrive and grow.

Hermaphrodite

Simply, a hermaphrodite is any animal that has both male and female sex organs or characteristics. One example of a hermaphrodite is an earthworm. The male and female sex organs both respectively produce an egg and a sperm. However, most earthworms still need a mate to reproduce.
